Bread & Butter, Faster

I've been saying that I'm going to bake a loaf of bread for the past 4 consecutive weekends. I've got all of the ingredients ready to go, but I keep not getting around to it.

I used to make my own bread every week. This was back when I was in college and spending an afternoon in the kitchen was better than writing a 20 page essay.

I want to believe that all that kneading and waiting around makes the bread more delicious, but this No-Time bread recipe from AT:Kitchn has me curious. There's little kneading and you pop the dough in the microwave to accelerate the rising time.

DIY Suitcase Planter

My brother made this succulent planter out of a vintage suitcase he found in the garbage, some prefab chair legs and scrap wood.

He lined the inside with plastic, placed potted succulents in the case and covered them with landscaping stone. The stones are heavy, but he reinforced the bottom with support beams and screwed the legs onto the frame underneath.

I showed this photo to a few friends at work and they said it was a very manly planter.

CORRECTION: This suitcase has not been augmented, but the Anthropologie version that inspired this project had a plywood-reinforced bottom.

How to Frost a Cake Without the Mess

You'd think a reasonable human being could figure out that the easiest way to ice a cake and get it onto the cake stand in one piece is to put a little wax paper under it and ice it on the cake stand.

In my case, you'd be wrong.

A first look at the Jovovich and Hawk line for Target via Racked (and Harper's Bazaar). I have to say I'm cautiously optimistic after a long string of Target fashion disappointments.

Though I continue to find great deals from the Isaac Mizrahi collection, I really couldn't get into the last three lines from Target's Go! International. Erin Featherstone skewed too young and girly, I was very disappointed with the quality of the Alice Temperley pieces (I think the designs were too ambitious for the price-point), and Libertine was a little too trendy.

I am sad that we have to wait until March for the Jovovich & Hawk collection to debut. So Target, if you're reading, please make it worth the wait.

Etsy Union Jacks

As flags go, the Union Jack has to be my favorite design. And I never tire of seeing it in all the colors of the rainbow.

I just hope these amazing pillows from Etsy are kosher with the Brits. Although, as international incidents go, a pillow fight would be an upgrade.

Today's Obsession: Poetic Glassware Storage

This rustic little shelf of glassware is absolutely beautiful. The sleek glasses are a wonderful counterpoint to the cabin-y, handmade feel of the rack.

It was hanging in the shop attached to the Le Gamine cafe in New York, which has since closed. So, it's unlikely to be available for sale anywhere.

I suppose you could replicate it with a little ingenuity. Which sort of sucks because I want it now.

Local Shopping Made Easy

Today I discovered a wonderful way to find locally grown/produced food. It's as simple as typing in your zip code (or city and state) on the Local Harvest search engine.

The site helps you find sustainably grown food close to you. Plus they have a catalog for anything you can't find in your area.

Cool Art on the Cheap: Untitled (Black Blocks)

I love this print of faux bois blocks from 20x200, the site that sells affordable, limited edition prints in multiple sizes. I had totally forgotten to check this site for the last few months (shame on me).

Messy Table Cloth

Have you ever used a table cloth? I've never been partial to them. It just seems easier to wipe the table top.

It probably doesn't help that most stores stock only the most stodgy and traditional styles.

But check out this Messy Table Cloth (apparently only available on this Polish-language site). I could actually see myself using something fun like this. And it's black, so it will be easy to get the inevitable red wine stains out.

Shopgoodwill.com Gets an Awesome Overhaul

My favorite online charity shop recently got a major face-lift. I just cruised over to shopgoodwill.com to look for some inexpensive art and found an entirely new, easier-to-use home page.

If you shopped the site in the past, you know that items were listed text-only. You had to click each link to see the product. But now, the listings include thumbnail photos of the items, just like eBay.

Hooray Goodwill.

Relic Necklace from Etsy

I'm not usually big on jewelry, but this yellow coral necklace from Etsy seller Mme. Fortuna is quite intriguing.

The piece is from a collection called Relic. Each hand-blown glass orb is filled with an every-day natural item turned "object", like a feather or a bit of earth.

The series is inspired by Victorian morning jewelry.

Each orb measures approximately 1" and hangs on a gold fill chain.

Radiator Food Warmer

The grass is always greener on the other side. But, if you live in Texas you might find yourself wishing it didn't stay green so much of the year.

We don't really get a lot of seasons here in Dallas. Example: it's November, 13th, and today's high is 86. We still have our air conditioners running.

So when I see something like this radiator-top breakfast tray, I can't help but feel a pang of jealousy.

We don't get many days that require radiators. Or have radiators, for that matter. But I like to imagine curling up in a warm chair on a cold day and enjoying a book, a latte and a muffin.
