I'm a big fan of a book called Turkish Style that I ordered from Amazon.com. The photos are gorgeous. I definitely know what you mean about Turkish interiors not bringing simplicity to mind first. They do have an amazing knack for layering opulent pattern as well.
After thinking about your post, I realized exactly what you meant. I had never noticed it, but most Turkish interiors are actually rather spare in terms of furnishings, even in a place as grand as the Topkapi palace. I guess the patterns in the tiles and textiles distracted me from that. Might prove an interesting lesson in combining simple functionality with opulent style. -X
Yes, that's exactly what I began to notice while touring there. It's an aesthetic that carries over into their cuisine as well - strong flavors created from just a few ingredients.

Thanks for the tip- I love Turkish style. Though I don't know if I usually think of simple when I remember my favorite Istanbul interiors... -X
